Back to Plog Comments I came across your blog today while looking for information on some old pieces I have. Would you be able to tell me something about my brooch and coral necklace? The brooch is a portrait of a woman on porcelain with a 14kt bezel. It does have a safety clasp so I was thinking it probably isn't pre 1900. The back side of the porcelain is incised with a number and has lettering and other numbers on it. .A jeweler examined it and said the workmanship was very good, but he really didn't know much about antique pieces. He also looked at the coral strands and thought they may be from the 1960's.
Answer,
I love your jewelry they are really a good example of fine antique and vintage jewelry in great condition.
The brooch looks hand painted and has an English style clasp. The number 113
is the mold number that was made in the casting. I would like to know what
the character in front of H V is. H S probably was the owner "34" probably
the year it was a gift to HV or it could be the artiest HV painted in "34".
Some body paid the artiest to paint the portrait. Sometime a affluent person
have a party and have a have a artiest & jewelry craftsmen to make the
pieces like this for the guest.
The coral necklace Is really beautiful. It is rare to have two stranded necklace and on top of that it is hard to find a beaded coral necklace most of them are natural shape coral. It take lots of time to make each bead on the necklace yet alone finding the coral to make the necklace. The beads are progressive in size that shows a signs of a master craftsmen made them. Judging from the silver clasp and the beads are not factory made because they are not perfectly round on the necklace. I would say it is from 1930's to 1940's. |
