Accessories held a prominent place in the late 19th
and 20th century, especially as introduced by Coco Chanel in the
1920s, and into the 1930s. Accessories were often utilitarian but combined utility
with beauty of design. The lorgnette, buckles, short hat pins and hat
ornaments, dress clips, sash pins, beaded bags and purses were very popular, and
the ‘necessaries’ included: coin purses, vanity cases, card cases and tiny
writing tablets complete with silver case and lead pencil. These accessories
added an expression of charm to the individual costume. The Art Deco period,
c1925, brought the powder and rouge compact, with bright lipsticks, and even the
elongated cigarette holder which gave a contrived saucy stance to the faddish
fashion models of the era. |
