Tortoise Shell Tortoise Shell is from the shell of the hawksbill turtle and has been used as a jewelry material since ancient times.  The finest color is usually considered to be translucent golden yellow with brown markings. However, the color can range from deep mottled brown to unmarked orange yellow. It is always partially translucent. Victorians were very fond of tortoise shell and used it enthusiastically. Today the tortoise is an endangered species.
The tortoise shell jewelry below show the rich browns colors to almost clear color on the cats tail.
