Earrings Jewelry Information

Back

Earrings have been around for thousands of years. Many historians believe that they originated in Western Asia in about 3000 B.C. Earrings have been ornaments of superstition, they've been used to attract good fortune,  and they've been symbols of wealth and fashion throughout history, appearing on the earlobes of both men and women. Up until the 20th century, most earrings were for pierced ears until it became "uncivilized", and a screw back type of fitting was invented. The 1930s introduced clip-on earrings, which are used up to the present day for those who don’t like holes in their ears.

Costume jewelry is a 20th century term. It was the rage of the 1930s and 1940s and brought glamour to fashion. Working girls longed for the movie style Hollywood glamour, and costume jewelry was affordable and looked the part. Beginning in the 1970s, ear piercing became fashionable once again.
