This piece is a beautiful Victorian vulcanite heart necklace, featuring cut-steel. Cut-steel jewelry was fashionable in Europe during the latter part of the
18th century and continued to be so well into the nineteenth century. It had a dual purpose: it was used as a substitute for metals as well as for diamonds. During the many years of mourning for Prince Albert,
vulcanite (which is a black rubber) was also stylishly used in jewelry. This beautiful heart has a cut-steel center and small carvings on each side hung on an antique silver chain. The chain measures 11" in length; the heart is 1" in length and 3/4" in width. This is a lovely antique piece of jewelry!
