Lady's Mourning Jewelry
Black Onyx Gold Diamond Pendant |
| Back |
This elegant piece of mourning jewelry is a true treasure. The pendant is black onyx with a 7mm pearl and hair-work on the other side. The bezel and
bail are 14kt. yellow gold with a swivel fastener which allows it to turn around freely from front to back. It has a flared bail design with black enamel detailing. Sixteen "Old Mine" rose-cut diamonds
adorn the bezel and bail. At the end of the 19th century, there was much sentimentality in the Western world. Queen Victoria's passion
for sentimental or commemorative jewelry helped popularize jewelry made from human hair, such as this piece. Americans were enlightened about this unusual craft by means of Godey's Lady's
Book in the 1850s. It has an Appraisal (not an insurance value)
of $600 in 2006. This is the first doublet pendant I have ever
seen. I have seen a few in rings. |
