Rings have been worn since 3000 B.C. and extensively so by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, and
have been continuously worn ever since in all civilizations. They are
easily the most popular form of jewelry. The majority of collectible
rings date from 1880 to the Retro period of the 1940s and will normally have
gemstones as the main focal point. |

Rings from the Edwardian period (1901 - 1910) were adapted to suit the dainty
and delicate designs of the period. Moonstones,
opals and pearls were favorite gems and were mounted in delicate settings. Rings
were popular for small children as well as babies at this time. Rings were
very popular in filigree settings made with precious metals and stones in
conjunction with less expensive materials. The octagon-style basket
setting was popular along with the hexagon domed-top ring. Dinner rings or
banquet rings, made with rich lacework were fashioned in various styles,
usually set with precious stones. The Romany ring, consisting of two rings
in one, usually had a diamond mounted in black onyx on one side while the flip
side displayed a beautiful carved cameo. This type of ring was in vogue in the
late 1920s and early 1930s. |
